Ads Drop Dot-Com URLs in Favor of "Facebook Us"

The following is also my March Forbes.com column.

Today it seems that many marketers are literally tripping over themselves to invade social networks in force. There's almost a land grab underway as businesses rush to set up hubs on the "big three": Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. You can definitely sense that we've passed a tipping point.

All at once, businesses large and small are increasingly recognizing that they need to go where the people are. And with 100 million Facebook users in the US who spend an average seven hours on the site each month (Nielsen), it's surely a no-brainer. When your local pizzeria is promoting their Facebook page at the register, as mine does, then you know that marketing has changed. The same applies to Twitter and YouTube.

However, with this land grab, a controversial shift is underway. The trusty dot-com URL, at least its role in marketing, maybe dying.

Some companies are de-emphasizing spaces they own, like their web site, in all of their ads. Instead, they're pushing people towards spaces they rent where people are spending time - e.g. their Twitter, YouTube Facebook hubs.

Case in point: UniBall. During the Winter Olympic games I was surprised to see the pen manufacturer use its TV ads to point people to its Facebook page. There UniBall is giving away 10,000 pens. Nowhere in its ads does Uniball promote its own web site. It's all about Facebook. Clever.

Much the same, I noticed the New York Knicks basketball team in its outdoor ads had only three calls for action - an SMS code, Twitter and Facebook. Again no URL. A dot-com was nowhere to be found.

Finally, during a recent Mashable event in New York, Columbia Journalism professor Sree Sreenivasan pointed out that this is becoming the norm in the motion picture business. Perhaps this is a function of living in a world where people hardly use bookmarks any more and just Google.

If this all sounds familiar, it should. It's all reminiscent of the mid-1990s when URLs started popping up in TV ads and billboards. Or worse, when AOL keywords first surfaced in the early 1990s. These were curious at first, then later, welcome. Now I guess a URL is just boring.

However, this time it's different.

For starters, when marketers promote their social network hubs over their URLs they risk that more savvy consumers will see right through it. People could perceive it as a flat attempt to look cool and hip. Consumers already skeptical of advertising and this just adds to it.

Second, the use of "heavy artillery" - e.g. advertising - to round up more fans and followers is equally controversial. This would be fine if it lead to true person-to-person engagement. However, many brands are just using their Twitter and Facebook presences to spew out updates, without any thought to how consumers will benefit by essentially opting in. UniBall is providing value but others don't go to such lengths.

Finally, much the same, very few businesses treat social networks as personal, conversational spaces. Hardly any feature real employees. And a scant few aim to advance shared interests.

So while it's welcome that marketers are beginning to promote the hubs they rent in all of the relevant communities, few are really optimizing them into true relationship builders. Most are devoid of humans - e.g. employees - and many look like faceless companies that are trying to check off boxes or slap shiny logos on their site.

In some ways, it makes sense to me that marketers are emphasizing their spaces where people are spending time and where they can be easily found. However, at the same time, with so few understanding what it takes - people - to really build credible relationships, I wonder how long this trend might last and if a backlash is the works.

If I were a dot-com URL, I wouldn't write my will just yet.

How to run an internet business without a website

All great marketers are saying that blogging is a great tool for marketing. Why? Because Blogs are a two-way conversation between blogger and bloggee (plus all the readers in between). Through commenting and cross-linking, you can share feedback. You can build your network. You can become, dare I say it, an Internet celebrity! Today I would [...]

Learning The Affiliate Marketing Business

You know, I always have been intrigued about affiliate marketing.  There are thousands and thousands of dollars floating around the internet just waiting to be claimed.  But I’ve tried it with a half-hearted effort and failed miserably.  Maybe I was listening to the wrong people?  I know I have spent thousands of dollars trying to learn it and I can’t do it… why?

Maybe I’m not doing things right?  Or maybe, the more sensible answer is that the people teaching, will teach you just enough to be dangerous?  I believe that is the explaination.

So I found this link about someone doing all the affiliate marketing stuff.  But the funny part is that he or she is willing to share all the information that they will be using. Pretty interesting isn’t it?

Anyway, here’s the hub that I found about it and the links in there are pretty good too.  What do you think about it?

Get Your Point Across in 30 Seconds or Less

In 1986 Milo Frank wrote a short book called, “How to get your point across in 30 seconds or less.”  This idea applies to articles as well as to speeches and other presentations. That’s not to say everything needs be communicated in that 30 seconds, but the key concept, justification and call to action, can and [...]

Insure Your Dream (part 4 of 4)

C - For the 97% of people, C stands for Casual. Most people are casual about their life. You could even call them passive observers. They let life pass them by day after day. Casual people are bored in life. They don’t know that life can be absolutely amazing if they only made a decision to dream big and step outside the societal role that they have conformed to over the years.

Casual is synonymous with comfortable. Casual clothing is seen and defined as simple and comfortable. You already know how I feel about being comfortable. When you’re comfortable, you’re not growing! You’re settling for things as they are at that very moment in life.

Even billionaires are constantly growing and expanding. It wasn’t enough for Bill Gates to create Microsoft and become a multi-billionaire. He didn’t want to stop there. Now he runs the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, one of the largest funded non-profit organizations in the world. Could he have stopped and settled for being the chief officer of Microsoft? Sure he could have! But he knows how important it is to keep pushing yourself and keep developing new dreams and visions. He’s dedicated to helping the world in more ways than one and knows that being comfortable does not contribute to society in a positive way.

Are you casual in regards to your life? Do you let your dreams go by unnoticed because you think those dreams are bigger than you? Let me tell you something, champion. You are so much bigger than your dreams. If you weren’t, you wouldn’t even have the mental capability to think them up. As the famed author of Think and Grow Rich, Napoleon Hill said, “What the mind can conceive, it can achieve.” I believe these words with all of my heart.

Those in the 3% group believe in staying Committed. You must be absolutely committed to your dream. If you’re not, no one else will be. No one else will believe in your dream if you don’t. You must be so committed to your dream that you can see it, taste it, touch it, feel it, and smell it. Your vision can become your reality if you’re committed.

When you make a commitment to someone, that commitment is as good as gold. People take commitments very seriously. If you break a commitment, it’s as though you don’t value the other person. You will more than likely lose that person’s respect. You may even lose all possibility of doing business with them again. When you give your word to someone that you are committed, they expect you to uphold your end of the bargain. When you don’t, you not only disappoint them, you disappoint yourself.

Have you ever made a commitment to yourself and broken it? Perhaps you committed to exercise five days a week. Perhaps you committed to quit smoking. How did it feel when you broke that commitment? It didn’t feel very good, did it? When it comes to your dream, you are the most important person in your life. When you break your own commitment, it’s as though you’ve given up on yourself. Make a commitment to keep your commitments. Don’t allow yourself to break them. Commitment will take you to places you never thought you could reach and beyond all realms of expectation.

E – Here’s where 97% of people just lose it. “E” stands for Enough. “I’ve had enough of this. I’ve had enough of dreaming, quitting is much easier. This is too hard. I’ve simply had enough!” These people give up on their dream. They dwell on the adversity rather than focusing on their dream. They forget that their vision controls their future, and they control their vision! They’ve had enough of dreaming. They’ve had enough of thinking about how they’d like to live their life. It’s so sad to think about the number of unfulfilled dreams that exist in the world.

There are an infinite number of unfulfilled dreams, because there are an infinite number of ideas that people simply give up on. But remember, everything has an opposite. If there are an infinite number of unfulfilled dreams, there are an infinite number of fulfilled dreams of people just like you that simply refused to quit.

Those people are in the 3% group and are Empowered by their dream. Their dream fuels them. They gain power from it. They wake up feeling good about themselves and blessed to have the ability to achieve their dream. In the old Greek, blessed means empowered to prosper. You have to be empowered to surpass mediocrity and achieve greatness.

The amazing thing is that when you are committed to achieving your dream, you not only empower yourself, but you empower the people around you to want more out of life. Empowerment is contagious. When you’re empowered, other people are empowered!

Now that you have an insurance plan for your dream, you’ll be able to stand toe to toe with anyone that challenges your ability to achieve it. Remember, you have made the decision to join the 3% crowd. Don’t listen to the naysayers or those stuck in the 97% group. It’s your dream so protect it!

Small Incision versus Small Decision (part 4 of 4)

Guys, resistance gives you the mindset of resisting, which is an active verb or a daily process of resisting.  ‘Ing.’  I-N-G.  Anything where you put ‘ing’ to word ‘resisting’ is the daily action of resisting and developing the resistance to achieve the success.  And then you can put ‘resisted,’ past tense.  “I resisted the enemy of going out with negative know it all friends.  I resisted of staying home.  I stood up and I went out to the event.  I resisted of not coming out to Lifestyle Freedom Club Millionaire Event.  I went down to the Mastermind Event.”  Resisted is because you have developed so much.  Resistance against the enemy is that you were able to resist, which in the past stole your dream.  Now that is good teaching, son.  It is so powerful.  The powerful world of resistance.  I will be doing a teaching shortly on the whole world of resistance.

And the last letter in the word ‘surgery’ is what champion?  ‘Y.’  What does ‘Y’ stand for?  What does Y stand for?  I want you guys to write this down:  “What do I stand for?”  ‘Y’ stands for ‘you.’  Y-O-U.  I want to take that to the next level, write it down:  “What do I stand for?”  Let me share with you what John Di Lemme stands for.  I stand for honor.  I stand for accountability.  I stand for integrity.  I stand for believing in people.  I stand for believing in you, believing in others, believing in myself, and believing God created all of us to live the abundant life.  That is what I stand for.  When you stand for something you stand strong.  What do you stand for?  The last letter in ‘surgery’ is ‘Y.’  Y-O-U.  What do you stand for?

I want to give you guys a homework assignment.  I want you to e-mail the team:

team@lifestylefreedomclub.com.

I want you to send an e-mail to the team here and say, “Guys.  Hi team.  This is what I stand for.  I stand for honor.  I stand for integrity.  I stand for focus.  I stand for clarity.  I stand for freedom.  I stand for my family.  I stand to be determined.  I stand to be a dynamic partaker of the championship life.”  What do you stand for?  Surgery.  A small incision.

And now I am going to recap all of this.  I am committed to make small incisions each day that empower me to make small decisions that create a long-term, successful life.  Commit each day to dig down deep.  Commit each day to perform surgery upon yourself.  I do it each day.  I dig down each day.  I go underneath and say, “John Di Lemme, how much farther can I go?  Where can I repair?  Where can I build?  Where can I grow?”  This enables me to enable more, to achieve more, and to empower more.  “What else can I do?  Where else can I focus to develop my resistance to develop the active verb of resisting so that I have resisted the temptation of fear, of low self belief, of associating with pigeons versus associating with eagles?”  “Why?”  Y-O-U.  Because I believe God creates champions.  I believe in you.  I believe you can commit to that small incision.  Understand that.  What do you stand for?  You stand for a championship life.  You stand for a God-given, anointed, and believing in the supernatural, abundance championship.  God bless you guys.

I am fired up for the Lifestyle Freedom Club.  I am so fired up.  Will you accept the immersion?  I want all of you that accept the immersion to send an e-mail team to:

team@lifestylefreedomclub.com.

Say, “John Di Lemme, Dan Giordano, and the Millionaire Freedom Team, I accept the responsibility of receiving the immersion so I can live my God-given dream.  I am resisting.  Like it says in the bible, “Resist the devil and he will flee.”  When you build up the resistance, the enemy, the devil, or whatever is trying to steal from you and kill and destroy your God-given destiny will flee because you developed up the resistance.

Man, I’m fired up!  I am decisive in my daily incisions to create the decisions that develop the lifestyle, develop the habits, to produce the champion that I know I am.

God Bless you guys.  You are a champion!  Fire it up and focused!  Have yourself a phenomenal Lifestyle Freedom Day!

Belief and Courage – The Gateway to Effective Self-Defense for Women

By: Ken Smith, 6th Degree Black, Royal Palm Beach, Fl.

Effective self-defense for women first begins with the mindset and belief in herself that she does not deserve to be raped, harassed or abused in anyway, shape or form. A woman’s ability to recognize impending danger and the warning signs of danger is also of prime importance in reducing her risk to dangerous situations.

So what happens when a woman finds herself in a dangerous situation? Can you imagine what her ability to defend herself successfully would be if she did not have this fundamental belief in herself that she is worth it and does not deserve abusive treatment.

Without this belief structure her odds of successfully defending herself and possibly her loved ones is diminished. With this belief system in place and her determination and commitment to survive she has the beginning foundation of successful defense. With this determination and commitment she now has the next necessary ingredient to defend herself and that ingredient is courage. Courage to stand up for oneself with commitment and determination is a very powerful character trait for a woman to possess but it can only exist if she believes that she is worth it.

Courage is not the absence of fear but how a woman responds to fear. When a woman realizes that she is in a potentially dangerous situation of course fear has the ability to overwhelm her and paralyze her. With courage the ability to appropriately respond to the given situation increases her likelihood of disarming a potentially dangerous situation before it escalates into something physical. As a martial artist we practiced dealing with dangerous situations all the time. By doing so we work on programming our courage response to neutralize dangerous situations. When a woman practices speaking up for herself or others or practices standing up in the face of fear her level of courage can start to grow in the face of adversity.

Courage is the ability to respond to take action which is a proactive frame of mind. This frame of mind is empowering because now the woman is in control of herself and may be able to control the situation. When a woman reacts fear is the dominating emotion and the situation is in control of her. A reactive state of mind puts the woman on the defensive and she assumes the role of a victim and now something is happening to her.

To reduce your risk of potentially dangerous situations practice responding in your own mind to an imagined threat. You will start to feel empowered by your imagined responses and that will help in developing your courage. In your imagination practice taking control of a dangerous situation and notice how you feel. This will help to alleviate the fear based emotions that can overwhelm women in times of adversity.
